Day one - Group arrives in Sorrento/Amalfi/Positano. Check in to hotel and free time, dinner and night over
Day two - Breakfast at hotel and meet with guide. Transfer to the port of Sorrento. Transfer in hydrofoil to Capri. Once on the island, board small rowboats for visit to the spectacular Grotta Azzurra (weather permitting). Tour of the island in minibus starting from the highest point, Anacapri. Visit to the famous Villa San Michele built at the end of last century by the Swedish doctor and writer, Axel Munthe. Next on to the historic centre of Capri and the botanical Gardens of Augustus. Free time for shopping and lunch. In the afternoon, meet at port for hydrofoil to Sorrento. Arrive at hotel in Sorrento, dinner and sleep over.
Day three - After breakfast, meet with guide and departure for Pompeii (30 km). Guided tour of the most famous archaeological site in the world. Lunch at a nearby trattoria. In the afternoon, transfer to Matera with a stop at the towns of Castelmezzano (170 km) and Pietrapertosa: situated in the heart of the Gallipoli Cognato Nature Reserve and both clinging to the rock face of the monumental Dolomiti Lucane mountain range. Walk through the characteristic narrow alleys around the historic centre of Castelmezzano with it’s spectacular view over the surrounding valleys and mountains. Arrive in Matera (79 km), check into hotel, dinner and sleep over.
Day four - Breakfast at hotel and meet with guide to visit the historic Sassi district made up of the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. Guided tour on foot through the antique peasant area. Visit to the cave churches of Santa Lucia alle Malve, Santa Maria dell’Idris and the extraordinary complex of the Convicinio di Sant’Antonio. Visit to a typical peasant cave dwelling, inhabited until the late 1950’s. Lunch at a trattoria in the Sassi. In the afternoon, visit to the Domenico Ridola National Museum, containing precious archeological artefacts found during archeological digs in the neighbouring areas. Visit to the Cathedral in Apulian Romanic style, walk around the baroque neighbourhood of the historic centre, the hypogeums of the main square, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the church of the Spirito Santo, Piazza Sedile, Piazzetta Pascoli. Return to hotel, dinner and sleep over.
Day five - Breakfast at hotel and transfer to Alberobello (74 km), characteristic town with trulli buildings that looks like something out of a storybook. Alberobello was declared Unesco world heritage site in 1996. Guided walk through the splendid narrow streets of the Aia Piccola and Rione Monti neighbourhoods, and through the typical cone shaped trulli that were built around 1700: Vist to the Siamese Trulli and Master Trullo: all built out of stone without the use of mortar. Later a visit to the Museum of the Territory, a noteworthy complex of trulli. Lunch at a local locanda and tasting of genuine Apulian gastronomic products. Transfer to Castel del Monte (112 km) to one of the most fascinating castles in Europe and the only example of medieval military architecture. The octagonal castle is found 18 kilometres from the town of Andria, on a hill at an altitude of 540 meters above sea level, dominating a vast valley. It was built between 1229 and 1249, as a hunting residence by Federico II of Svevia who was a keen hunter. After the visit transfer to Trani and visit to the historic centre of town and the breathtaking medieval cathedral on the sea front. Return to Matera, dinner and night over.
Day six - Breakfast at hotel and departure.
