Flavours and Traditions of Lucania / 5 days 4 nights

Day one - Arrival in Matera and check in to hotel in the heart of the Sassi.
Transfer to Torre Spagnola (7 km), picturesque agriturismo: local farm serving many products made on the premises in an unspoiled natural context. Gastronomic workshop in the medieval courtyard of the building. Guests get to participate actively in making mozzarella cheese. Lunch is served including focaccia breads with fresh tomatoes and local olives, bruschettas, barley stew with creamed beans and maltagliati. Return to Matera and free time at hotel. In the late afternoon guided walk around the Sassi neighbourhood and cave churches of Santa Lucia alle Malve, and Santa Maria dell’Idris as well as the Museum of peasant history. Walk to local trattoria in the Sassi for a dinner of rich antipasti, strascinate (large flat noodles made with unrefined flour and rolled by hand) with wild mushrooms and sausage meat, pan cotto (bread stew with tomatoes and wild vegetables) tender lamb baked with potatoes and baby artichokes (season permitting). Evening walk through the Sassi back to the hotel. Sleep over.

Day two - Breakfast at hotel and transfer to Sarconi, set among the hills of the Val D’Agri, to the farm Per Boschi e Contrade where a festa is organised for the group with live folk music, traditional folk dancing and a wide array of sweet and savoury jams and spreads including the renown red pepper jam and bean jam made with sarconi beans DOC combined with the freshest of local cheeses: warm ricotta, burrata, fresh and seasoned goats milk cheeses, local caciocavallo etc. After lunch, walk around in the surroundings of the farm and transfer to an agriturismo in Viggiano. Dinner and sleep over.

Day three - Breakfast at hotel and transfer to Grumentum for guided tour of the roman archaeological site dating back to IVth century b.C. and of the National Archeological Museum of Val d’Agri. Lunch at a typical local restaurant. Then transfer to the organic wine maker Pisani and visit to the farm. Tasting of Alta Val d’Agri DOC wines with typical scaldatelle. Dinner and sleep over in agriturismo in Viggiano.

Day four - Breakfast at hotel and departure for Lagopesole. Visit to the imposing Federician Castle built around 1250 on an existing Norman fortress. Then on to Rionero in Vulture to the noteworthy Cantine del Notaio, tasting of their excellent wines. Transfer to Venosa, birthplace of one of the greatest Latin poets, Quinto Orazio Flacco (65 AC) and later part of Frederic II Swabian’s Empire. Guided tour to the jewish catacombs and to the aragonese castle and to the National Museum of Archaeology as well as the archaelogical area housed inside. Visit to the Abbey of the Holy Trinity and to the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea Apostolo, built in 1470, to the roman amphitheatre and to the house of Orazio. Transfer to Melfi and check in to a 4* hotel. Transfer to Barile and dinner à la carte at the renown Locanda del Palazzo.
Return to Melfi and sleep over.
